Hi all, this is my first post! I'm an extremely new-bee, got my nuc in September, now have one brood box and one super separated by a queen excluder - as per profile pic. I have just inspected my hive and can find no sign of queen, eggs or larvae. Plenty of bees and plenty of honey - in fact last inspection 2-3 weeks ago there was no honey, but queen was there and laying. Has my queen swarmed/died? What do I do now?
Ok so we are new, new, new to bee keeping. In fact we had talked about getting a hive only a few times before we where "donated" one by a friend/past commercial keeper who helps us out with our never ending questions. It was a surprise but a welcome one, if not a tad scary. Soooooo..... We went to inspect out hive yesterday evening (yep we know sundown is not a good time but due to a few unforeseen issues we had unfortunately no other choice), and where pleasantly surprised to see that there was a large amount of capped honey and a reasonable amount of brood in the top brood box, we only have 2 boxes going right now. But when we looked at the bottom box there was honey some capped, but all the cells that where meant to have brood where empty! And I mean all the frames had no brood! The top one is a new full depth,10 frame box, the bottom is an old 3/4 depth 10 frame. Did we put the second box on to soon? The bottom box is a very old box with very old frames does that matter? Would they shrink so the queen cant fit to lay? The queen is a new ish queen put in place in late December. Any ideas would be good. Just want to know how to prevent/fix this if we can so we can split in spring. Thanks!
