  1. Hello Everybody, I am an enthusiastic beekeeper in the Netherlands visiting your beautiful country next summer in December, January en February. I am a small time enthusiast with three hives in a pet zoo also for educational purposes. But not only. We harvested about 50 kilograms of honey from two hives this year and that was exceptional much in spite of the warmest and driest summer ever in the Netherlands. This was the richest harvest in my 7 years’ experience. At first I’ll travel the North and South Island with a friend for a month, starting in Auckland and finishing in Christchurch. So I still have two more months to roam around all by myself and I am interested in beekeeping in New Zealand, commercially and non-commercially. How is it not only in theory but also in daily life practice being a beekeeper in New Zealand? Who may I visit in January or February 2019? Please let me know and send me a message. Thanks. Jeroen Smit Apeldoorn, Netherlands
  2. Hi there First time poster so apologies if I am asking this question in the wrong place. I'm looking for advice on how best to go about selling honey both domestically and for export, based on the following circumstances: My partner and I have family that look after a couple of hives each (probably about 5-10 hives across the country). At this stage it's just a hobby that we like to help with. None of the extraction, processing or bottling is certified or done under proper regulation in any way. Of course, this means that we also don't sell the honey and simply share it amongst ourselves. We would like to change that. Most of our honey is made in the Waikenae/Wellington region, so we would like some advice on how to go from 'hobbyist' to producing honey that is regulation compliant and ready for commercial sale. For example, I understand that the honey must be extracted in a certified kitchen. Is anyone aware of somewhere in Wellingont that this can be done? Alternatively, we're interested in the private label/resale side. As you can see, we aren't producing a lot of honey with only a few hives. Ideally we would like to up the volume if we get into selling commercially. Is it possible to supplement our existing honey with honey purchased wholesale? What are the minimum order quantities for a bulk buy, and will that honey come pre-packaged and processed? Unfortuantely, we don't know any one that has "walked this path" before so we feel a bit out of our depth. Is anyone aware of mentors that are able to help with this sort of thing? I feel like something as simply as a a chat with someone who has experience with this would make a world of difference to us at this point. Really appreciate any advice, Thanks

Now I would like to acctually start with beekeeping and would like to purchase a Nuc hive from a trustworthy source. I wanted to get recommendations from you where to get it and how much the maximum cost should be. before I forget : I wish all you guys a happy new year. I really like the atmosphere in this forum! best regards, Norman
  4. The need is growing to address unethical practices. UNETHICAL practices by beekeepers who install hives on land in the vicinity of manuka is basically theft, says Victor Goldsmith, chairman of a number of East Coast land trusts. Mr Goldsmith is calling for local and central government to regulate the industry. “We cannot allow this practice to continue. With no regulation it will get worse.” As the East Coast manuka honey industry grows, hives are appearing on adjoining lifestyle properties near manuka plantations, says Mr Goldsmith.
