  1. I like the idea of branding all my boxes and frames. With the small amount of gear I have to brand, Heating an iron in a fire/bbq is acceptable. This steak branding iron is cheap enough to try, but it has no numbers. Does anybody have a good idea for a cheap branding iron to scorch my reg number into my hiveware? https://www.aliexpress.com/item/Personality-Steak-Meat-Barbecue-BBQ-Branding-Iron-55-Letters-Tool-Sets/32516738286.html?spm=2114.search0204.3.9.1DU5Al&ws_ab_test=searchweb0_0,searchweb201602_4_10152_10065_10151_10068_10344_10345_10342_10343_10340_10341_10541_10540_10307_10060_10155_10154_10056_10055_10054_10539_10538_10537_10059_10536_10534_10533_100031_10099_10103_10102_5590020_10052_5640020_10053_10107_10050_10142_10051_10084_10083_5370020_10080_10082_10081_10110_10175_10111_10112_10113_10114_10312_10313_10314_10078_10079_10073,searchweb201603_25,ppcSwitch_3_ppcChannel&btsid=a3da5bc8-260f-49c9-81c0-4e8ad035b605&algo_expid=ff985b3a-5040-46b8-93de-9bfe35f7b40e-1&algo_pvid=ff985b3a-5040-46b8-93de-9bfe35f7b40e
  2. If you really want a window without condensation, get a double glazed window, or on the cheap, put a thin piece of poly on the window to insulate it while you're not looking in.
  3. Christchurch west side. Sux to be you @Lucy Tasker When I said "your" I meant Ecrotek. I realize you're just a PR person.
  4. Sounds like your priorities are misplaced and I call shenanigans on internet transfer speed and cables. We have fibre in this area, ethernet cables and cable ties are dirt cheap.
  5. I got annoyed at the forum "update" process and haven't updated any details yet.
  6. I know exactly what your describing and nope defiantly not that. I haven't seen it recently, i saw it before winter, only very few bees, probably never more than 2 at once, on the hive i got that had a very high mite count when i got it, so i wasn't "worried" it was just something strange I noticed. It was only patrolling guard bees around the entrance. Kinda how they rub their back legs together and lift their abdomen while grooming, but more "tweaky" than usual and while they are walking, almost hopping.
  7. Thanks for the info. I still find it hard to see in your short video, no doubt due to my inexperience rather than your video. This video is very obvious to me there is something very wrong. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Os0FhiRow2U The strange behavior of my bees I've observed is nothing like that. More like an abdomen raising tweaking walk I've only really seen on guard bees. Now i think of it, most phones self orientate these days, There's likely a setting to set video screen layout to landscape. Dam birds are eating bees off the landing board. Hung some cds from string around the hive, hopefully it'll deter the birds. I didn't think my last comment was that dumb, dunno what that jafas problem is.
  8. Please hold your phone in the correct orientation when shooting video. Portrait layout video is very unpleasant to look at. How did you diagnose CBPV, Do you have a good link where I can read up about it? I don't really see much strange about their movement in your video, I've seen my bees moving in a strange manner before, CBPV has crossed my mind but I know very little about it other than anecdotal speculation.
  9. Today I filled another ice cream container of drone brood from both hives. They are defiantly not lacking in drone numbers. Still only play cups so far. Both hives appear very strong, bare foundation FD supers went on 3-4 weeks ago, they're both approx 90% drawn, 75% filled and 50% capped. Alcohol wash results from today were 3 from one hive and over 40 from the other. eek. I had a small brain fade 3-4 weeks ago when i decided to put supers on, forgetting completely about spring mite treatments. So The hive with tons of mites got emergency Bayvarol treatment today and that honey super I won't extract, I'll feed it back to that hive probably come winter time. I believe It is safe to eat the honey, only the wax absorbs flumethrin and comb honey is potentially unsafe for human consumption, but from searching the web, most people would much rather not have their honey exposed to these synthetic chemicals. Question: With a current mite count of 3 in my other hive, using drone trapping and culling, possibly a sugar sprinkle treatment, monitoring the situation, do you think i could get away without spring synthetic treatment. I hope the hive with the Bayvarol doesn't get desperate for space before 6 weeks is up, I'm guessing it will tho. I'll have to grease up to a friend to let me store some of those (not for human consumption) frames in her deep freezer and give the bees more frames to work on. The 3 count hive, if I can get away without synthetics, I'll put a second super on next week. (and buy some hive straps) I was thinking for the next super i'll checkerboard foundation frames with some bare non wired frames to a: cut the costs a little and b: i'm guessing comb honey is nicer without the foundation and much easier to cut at harvest if there are no wires in the way. I've seen lots of videos of people dropping combs from foundation-less, non wired frames so I know the care that needs to be taken when handling, especially a half drawn comb that's full of nectar. Oh my science the aroma that comes from a beehive is amazing. That sweet warm wax smell.
  10. I filled an ice cream container with drone brood from 2 drone traps a couple weeks ago. It's like candy for chickens.
  11. Hi @Lucy Tasker. I've mentioned this to you before, after a recent trip to your Chch branch, I found myself again wondering how you can run a sales shop with such a painful payment system. The small shop and frequent out of stock items doesn't bother much at all, but 5 minutes to make a transaction is ridiculous. Hope you sort this out soon, I guarantee you'r loosing customers because of this.
  12. Good photo. Let the puns begin.
  13. Agreed. Stuff sucks so bad. "someone opened the hive and smashed the honey cone" There is no such thing as editors any more. Many articles appear to be written by twelve year olds. I decided to boycott anything from Fairfax media after reading a slanderous article about some p head finding p in his ice cream. Naming the ice cream company and everything.
  14. I put a FD super on each of my two, 2 FD hives today. Ten frames of bare foundation each, I have do not have any drawn combs being a newbee. Best of my 2 hives has worker brood across both boxes, hundreds of drones, hundreds of drone brood, new capped honey, tons of pollen in cells and coming in the door. I had massive traffic jams before I removed the mouse guard 2 days ago.
