  1. Well I don’t think commercials are on the outskirts of the city. I know of commercials asking to put hives right in the middle of town, that too around 30 to 40 hives in one backyard each. These are some of the large commercials around. If I know of a few sites then there could be a lot more that I don’t know of. So when you look at hive density, you might be surprised to find that there are more commercial hives in town than hobby hives.
  2. Filled a full depth box and added another box on top. Not too bad. Had the right size ladder.

  4. The thing is a lot of people have selected bees in nz for characteristics such as low swarming, high honey production etc, but only a hand full or even one or two bee breeders have even looked at selecting for hygienic behaviour where they freeze the brood or pin kill the brood and see how fast the bees clean it up. It does take a lot more time and energy but that’s what is required to select for hygienic behaviour. It can be a very useful tool against AFB. The question is do we have the resources and funding to do that and do we have bee breeders with a large number of hives willing to go thr
  5. This is where genetics can come to assist where bees are able to detect and eliminate the threat before they become an issue. I think that's where NZ is lacking a lot. We have been selecting bees for honey production, gentleness etc, but nothing significantly towards hygienic behaviour until Varroa became an issue. Maybe we can learn from other countries who has made some progress in this area. https://www.motherearthnews.com/homesteading-and-livestock/minnesota-hygienic-bees-naturally-healthier-than-other-bees https://www.beelab.umn.edu/sites/beelab.umn.edu/files/new-
  6. Its not nice to loose hives to AFB when its not your fault and when a neighbouring beekeeper is complacent or ignorant about his checks and keeping hives to the standard. I think The whole of Hamilton and the surrounding areas need a through check and if hives are found then they need to be dealt with and then maybe inspect again in a few months time all around Hamilton to make sure things are actually under control. Talking to the inspector, funding was a major issue with AFB management and enforcement of compliance. May be it is time people have to be fined for unregistered
  7. Got the hives checked today. All clear and doing well. The inspector was very impressed with the way the hives were looked after and kept.
  8. Apparently there were 8 hives found heavily infected in Hamilton area last week.
  9. I am all good with it. Just want to make sure it’s done properly and tools are properly sterilised before they get used on my hives. Don’t want to catch AFB from the inspection. I have asked to give me a time when I can be present and maybe take the frames out myself for the inspector to inspect.
  10. Has anyone in Hamilton area got a phone call about a compulsory AFB inspection due to high number of AFB being found in the area?
