Got a couple of interesting emails today from someone who will remain nameless (for now) … included was this gem... "...our historical export markets in Europe for Clover & Honeydew were not supported by NZ beekeepers over the last 6 years, this effectively removed NZ from the market from a buyers perspective, we are now paying the penalty." rule of thumb... 1 metre or 1 kilometer, nothing inbetween. But as Frazz says, if there is nothing left in the old spot most of them will figure it out

@kaihoka ... queens will often have an entourage surrounding them, a circle of workers facing her, licking and feeding her. Yes she can be buried under a clump of workers. Always check each side twice as she loves ducking through holes or going over an edge! I scan the outside of the frame first then run my eyes over the center. And yes, I still have to go through a box a couple of times occasionally, sometimes she will be on a wall or floor too.

I mark every Queen as soon as she has capped brood, different colour for those mated before and after Christmas. Being able to accurately age them and differentiate between "Spring" and "Autumn" matings is very helpful. Also marking means you know you are dealing with the same Queen you saw last time. As for helping/hindering the finding... I find it makes her jump out if she has a big bright dot, but its not the dot I look for. It is more her thorax and abdomen, her movement, the movement of the bees around her. And I sort of don't see the workers when I am looking for the Queen, they are a
