  2. Try the local new world fish department, ours gives away the poly bins, little long but good for a feeder at the back and cut the floor, fit mesh on underside with wood supports and screws with washers from inside, work real well and cost $10. If u cut floor the FD fit nicely or 3/4 with out floor cut. The ones I get have never had fish in them as they have a liner fitted from the salmon farm.

  3. Four other nucs I have,2 FD and 2 3/4 were inspected 2 days ago...all but one have mated queens now and the strongest was transferred to a single FD box.I gave the queenless nuc a frame of larvae and capped brood from its neighbour so will check next week...will get a shake out if no good. So today after waking up thought I better get some bits and pieces done around here... Strip down the extractor and give it a good clean out...ready for the first try at spinning out some honey! Assemble a couple bases, paint some boxes, repair some earlier made frames, assemble and paint nuc boxes...

  4. The temperature is always constant inside the hive so the bees will do other activities instead trying to cool down the hive

  5. Tidying up some older nuc boxes over the weekend I noticed a few investigating, more bees yesterday and more today looking very excitable. 2.15pm this lot arrive:) Video, I had it on pause when they first turned up so I didnt get video of the first lot coming up the driveway. Looks like it will be a pretty full 5 frame nuc box.

  7. No. But I will be checking a hive down the road. The lady is a first season beek and I just need to be sure it hasnt swarmed. If it has then she will get these bees back.

  8. I got thirty for free from one shop and took a few weeks thinking about it once I got them, now take 10minutes to make one max and I also stack them and have nice small bee space between layers. Have added vents in top boxes on angle so water can not flow in.

  9. Really nice day here, hives growing and bringing in heaps of nectar, all going gang busters, new boxes being added. Excluders today added to some frames taken from below of nectar placed over and frames replaced below, most hives having about 10 plus frames of capped brood and some relaid in from new season splits over two FD boxes. Spring queens going well.

  10. I think the banks are aggressive with good news and conservative with bad news . IE manuka honey prices going thru the roof - how much money would you like sir ? Are you sure thats enough ? No equity ? I think we can overlook that just this once ! Changes to the manuka standard - Ahh at the present time our advise is to hold off until the market sends some signals to give us guidance as to where median term prices will be . Come back in a few months and we will re access the situation . No different to farm borrowing , property speculation etc .

  12. At some point you need to determine if they making swarm cells or supercedure cells if it's the latter you may end up with no queen in your main hive and no resources left to rear a new one, in which case you would combine one of your nuc mated queens.

  13. Keeping up with gear is a tricky one. Basically I think if you haven't got an empty box in the shed ready to go, then build one. Or even two. You never know when a swarm is going to turn up and need hiving.

  15. Nice video Trevor. If you use a foam roller it won't splatter. Also, if you are about to roll frames for 1000 supers you need to speed it up a bit. I've slowly drifted into the old TMU. If you cut 5 sec per frame you gain 11 work hours ( if you have 8 frames in your supers). 10 sec is half a week. Time is always an issue in my opinion.
