Hives Manawatu - Making pollen supplement patties - YouTube

The spring weather has been bad enough that the bees haven't been able to collect enough pollen to feed to the growing brood, so I'm making up and feeding out FeedBee patties...

This apiary looks inappropriately located and therefore deficient in the diverse natural pollen sources the bees require. From FeedBee - "We had to add many ingredients for their attraction, as alternative sources of nutrients and to obtain maximum palatability and digestibility." In other words, the bees didn't like eating it so they added stuff to make them want to eat it. Icing sugar is the absolute worst thing to feed, no wonder Nosema apis and Nosema ceranae are flourishing.

@Nicholas there is plenty of pollen out there, as evidenced by the amount they're bringing in when the weather is fine, but I don't care where your hive is, if the bees can't get out to collect pollen and they're raising brood, then they'll go short. Why do you say icing sugar is bad? The sugar itself is no different from white sugar, and the tapioca in that one doesn't gum the bees up like the cornstarch variety does.
