That's one downside to nucs, not enough room!

And with honey frames in the brood box or nuc ,do the bees consume the honey to make room for queen to lay?

Just,like I mentioned above,the nucs are full of honey/ nectar so if the virgin went out,got mated and came back...all spare frames full of nectar.

I thought ,put some drawn combs in...but they might get filled of nectar too.

Ideally there should be room for a queen to lay. Swap in some drawn comb frames if you can.

Virgin queen seen today in walkaway nuc split made on 31/10/16....will leave alone now for next couple weeks.Fingers crossed.(y)

A mini mating nuc I took the mated queen from with the intention to add a new cell now has its own self raised virgin running around. I am quite interested to see how this little unit does turning over its own queen. There is a good amount of bees and capped brood in it now so I topped up the sugar compartment and will check in 2 weeks for a mated queen.

Finally got to use some of my own mated queens to make new nucs today. And also able to add a new queen cell to the now queenless mating nucs. I will be trying to keep this system cycling right through to March next year.
