Thing is i dont see anyone here taking any notice of anything trees for bees are putting out.

Are you seeing anything up your way?

hard to say. there has been tree planting going on but no idea if any of that was influenced by the trees for bees.

a lot will depend on the push from fonterra and federated farmers.

one reason i like the willows so much is its something that people see value from. its really unstable land around here and they are regulatory used for that. so its an easy sell, just have to get the right ones for them to plant.

so trees for bees recommend exotics, not just natives

Correct. The name is Trees for Bees. Not Native Trees for Bees. However natives are also listed.

Quite possibly. $200 is fine, $700 is stretching it a bit even if the odd hive is sold for that.

Then there's the other end of the scale. The NBA website still includes a statement about picking up a four box hive for around $150. Go figure!

Im inclined to suspect that if someone dumped 400 nucs over a month period on trademe at $250 each buy now, it would cool the market significantly.

Wouldn't be dumping them all at once I suspect.

I have sold nucs on tm before 1 at a time.

The buyers wanted everything I had.

The way the market is at the moment 400 nucs wouldn't make a dent to prices.

Just my opinion.

I would be interesting to count the nucs actually sold this year.

Last year I had a pretty good idea of overall volume as I brought most of them.

I think the volume is smaller than most would believe

It would not even touch the sides.

I have had Inquiries for easily over 10,000 in the last 6 months. Just today I could have sold 650. Vast majority of calls are from the North Island.

Someone dumping 400 nucs on TM @ $250 each would be missing out on up to $200.00 per nuc this season :)

My point was to demonstrate my suspicion that TM sales arnt as large as many think.

Its the high prices that are drawing the attention.

It doesn't matter really.

I agree that wholesale demand is huge.

Its possible that more big operators may use TM this year having been a little conservative in the past.

If this happens then the TM prices will come back to within $100 dollars of wholesale then later on probably a margin of $50 or less.

The following year may see a very small premium on retail sales

By wholesale I mean non Trademe. This is because the trademe buyers may not have inside access to most sellers

i can breed queens ok its getting them mated in spring that is the problem.

i think it most likely they do like to fly at 1/ 1.30 pm. chances are the wind is up by then here

i wonder if getting them mated in spring. is a problem for commercial queen breeders .

is most of the commercial queen breeding done in windless warm spring places like the east coast of both islands.

Yep, last year was a bit patchy, cold wet spring, made for later queens, those boys just stayed inside in the warm, drinking coffee and surfing the net! Any truth in this summer being hot and dry?

Ask again in May 2016 and I will be able to tell you. Those who predict weather rarely get it correct.

leaves say so

And that is about as accurate an estimate of the weather as it possible.

If the leaf is dry - then the day is fine.

If the leaf is wet - then the day is raining.

She is new here and does not have the required 10 posts to have access to the Trade Bee section. I decided that her post could stay as she is not advertising just saying what she is selling her stuff for. A bit technical but that's what this thread is about.
