AFB inspection in Paraparaumu

Recommended Posts

Posted (edited)

Hi

It’s quite a nice day today so I thought I’d give the bees a quick mid winter check.

One hive appeared to have inconsistent capping on the brood. I uncapped and inside was brown after a swirl with a match stick and drew out.

Someone could give me a second opinion would be appreciated.

Happy to pay.

Cheers

Hayden.

Here is a link to a video that shows you how to do an indicative test for AFB.
Its not 100% accurate but I have found it useful when used in conjunction with other tools like second opinions etc

When Ive used it I include a number of controls along with multiple suspect samples.
I keep a kit in my truck all the time.

Best to have a cell carrier as well so that the sample can be incubated easily but body heat is apparently adequate.

My kit includes 6 plastic test tubes with corks and a small pack of skim milk powder

Hi @Hayden we have very strict rules on this forum about posting personal details (phone and email) however, as a moderator on this forum I have decided to let your details stand.

This is only because of the AFB potential issue.

Please post here once this has been resolved and I will then come back and remove your private details.

Thanks for your post.  Very brave indeed.

Also, don’t forget the AFB “pregnancy” test. Relatively inexpensive and easy to leave in your kit.

I would like to see it assessed/endorsed by the AFB agency teaching though, or it it’s actually no good then they should say so and get it off the market.

I did a video with it here.

I found it pretty good.  and on another test it gave a negative on a PMS frame.

Here’s a few photos of the frame on the day of the inspection. Sadly a case of AFB. We had 3 cells draw out, a pupal tounge, a few other cells which also looked suspect and a bit of scale on the inside of a couple of cells

A darn shame @Hayden, it can happen to anyone no matter how hard you try.

You did very well spotting the problem and following up in the way you have done.

Do you have other hives?

Yeah, got two more and a nuc, it was a great learning experience and that’s the bit I enjoy so I’m not too worried (except for the $ part)

Just shows even a beginner can do it.

Well done Hayden, if everyone was as good as you we would likely have eliminated AFB from New Zealand.
