Apps for beekeeping

Recommended Posts

I'm keen to hear feedback on the use of apps in beekeeping. There seems to be a fair few of them. Our company has MyApiary and to be honest I still cant decide whether it improves beekeeping above the old forms of keeping records - notebook and pen.

The only app that would be useful is one where a hammer smacks you on the head whenever you decide to look at your phone instead of  looking through your hives.

You can't beat the notebook and pen

I use a notebook with letters down one side A to Z, makes finding each site really fast and easy.

Yeah my feeling after using one. More ticket clippers jumping in on the action

I've looked but not found anything computer or app based that provides what I want.  Nucs are numbered and I use a notebook for them , for Queen raising a notebook and write on frames etc also mating nucs are numbered, and for hives mainly by writing on the lid or tape placed on a different position on the lid tells me something.  Some info gets transferred into a master spreadsheet daily for easy future reference eg strips in, eg feeding done eg last visit eg action required at site etc.

For me the best record is writing on the lid with a posca  queen marker as they last, unlike a vivid.

Alfex tag pen works great on steel lids can generally read it a year later

I purchased an annual subscription of MyApiary (got a 30% discount during the trial period, which I used when I paid).  It would be a good app I think - if you could actually use it when you are outside cell phone area (who in their right mind would create a beekeeping app that you can only use in areas with cell phone reception!), and if you could get it to give you a reminder on a date that something needs to be done in your apiaries (e.g. the date you want to remove varroa strips).  Unless they change these two things in the next year, I won't be renewing my subscription.

Can anyone tell me where they get their weatherproof stickers that can be put on the lids - which can survive New Zealand's strong sun? I got some printed in China and shipped to New Zealand, but they are delaminating after a few months of sun-bathing.

I just have a diary that I write in usually while my worker is opening a gate. If it takes longer to fill in than it takes to open and close a gate it is too slow for me. I just write down the important bits, what I did and what I need next time.
