Dear Santa,

It's been a miserable day on the bees today ..... cold and wet and the bees have been as grumpy as heck. They are not happy. I am not happy .... but then I had a thought Santa ... if you ever talk to the Big Man ..... just tell him we are easy either way. Too much rain and no honey and we are good because the price of our honey in the shed will go through the roof,  while too much rain and the long awaited for 30c will also work as quantity always wins over quality.

Yours

JC

PS. If you are headed this way, I could use some of those fancy thick leather gloves and we can look after your little critters  rain or shine.

Takes too long to put them on , they are cumbersome, jump in the truck to move it and the steering wheel gets covered in wax an stuff , some other b33333 generally steels them, can't catch queens in them ......  you certainly can't roll a smoke with them  or use yer telephone ......the list goes on.

Argh. Editing time out on the above with a dodgy internet connection. Bees seem to be a little overloaded this am.

I failed Queen Catching 101 again today. I had put aside an old dud queen with a couple of frames and this morning decided it was adios time. She jumped off the frame and flew away.

I had that at one site last week just after nearly a week of rain. Scraped some burr comb off a hive mat that had honey in it, “nek minit”

I attended a primary school shared lunch recently and I think it’s similar. Made me want to scream “CUT THIS OUT”. But instead I just ground me teeth.

Two days ago i found two tall hives that had fallen over unstrapped.
They had been like that all through the rainy period and no robbing at all.

Well brought up I suppose

@nikki watts is there a flow  on at yours now , like pohutukawa.?

Has a big flow just finished.?

I was expecting robbing when the migrant beeks arrived 2 weeks ago.

But there must be something in the bush even though the kamahi is finished because there has been none .

We have lots of manuka and kanuka flowering and mahoe maybe thats enough for the bees.

This was a showery kind of day. I had combined the hive on the left with another one which was doing nothing. In the time spent mucking around they all got into robbing. Plenty of Manuka/Kanuka flowering. Not much pohut in this area. Flow is still stop/start here so this must have been a stop day.

Also a new beek had come into this area and massively overstocked his 3/4 acre section.

?

That is such a pain.

Of course that situation wont last When he looks at his honey yeilds , but there will be collarteral damage   , ie you.

I wonder how long it will take for lower honey prices to work through into lower bee hive numbers.

Of course for you in the middle of manuka and kanuka The pressure may increase.

Yep. It may come down to who can hold on the longest. Problem is we have invested in 800acres, he’s got a 3/4 acre section. Who’s the smartest ?

You can see why divine retribution has such appeal.

And life on the moral high ground does not have the rewards it used too have .

hope he bought one of those super-cheap, super-thin beesuits and is of the "good beekeepers don't need smoke/veil/gloves" variety, that should sort things out ;)
