hived swarm brood

Recommended Posts

How soon after hiving a swarm should I expect to see brood?  If it is a normal swarm with an older queen, I assume she would start laying immediately, but I gather you can sometimes have second swarms around a virgin queen...in which case, I assume she would have to mate before starting to lay.

Virgin Q swarms usually take about a fortnight for me. After swarms can sometimes be a bit small to build layable comb in any sort of a hurry too...

Hi, I like to check swarms after about 10days i like to give them time to settle in. On the first inspection i do all the usual checks then look for the queen

and mark her. If no eggs are present i will check in another 3 weeks.

I inspect about day 3, and chuck in Philbee’s OA staples for about three weeks , then take them out again.

How many staples @M4tt for a boxed (ie not Nuc) swarm? The usual 4 or 3?

Enough so there is one leg of a staple down each seam of bees
