Guess The Honey

Recommended Posts

Here's a bit of fun to get everyone's brains ticking this morning...

Was having a look through my brothers hive and much to my luck the wooden frame broke. Anyway, we let the honey drip through and this is a sample of what we were left with...very, very dark honey. Came from urban area (Hawke's Bay); was in the second box in a frame I put in no later than 4 weeks ago; hard to see with the jar but is very deep red in colour; and has a tart taste with an almost 'burnt' after taste...my tastebuds think it tastes like burnt golden syrup.

Being the time of the year it is, our household are all thinking gum, but are interested to see what the rest of the community think..

@Courtney L Neilson gum often has a citrus taste,

do you know when the bees collected it.

does anyone observe what big trees or plants are flowering in the area and whether there are bees on them.

Or robbed out someones red food-coloured syrup in the area. Does it taste like sugar mixed in?

My townie bees are pigging out on strawberry figs at the moment . The figs are dark red inside so will have to have a look in the next few days to see if they are storing any .

Are you sure you haven’t mixed the jar up with your plum jam! ?

@Courtney L Neilson, Has there been much penny royal flowering around your area? Many years ago before varroa, I used to get a late crop that looked like that and harvested about now .

my guess would be honey dew of some kind.

ever checked what willow honey dew tasts like? i can't quite remember.

i see mainly very dark honey this autumn in the hives.

hope it's not willow dew, or worse: poplar

make sure it's not tut contaminated before you give it to the kids!

Willow dew is light brown, coarsely granulated and solid in the frame I’m sure this happens within days of it being collected.

@kaihoka @yesbut

Its an educated guess, but I would be hunting down Pollen Nation- a Nelson based company started early this season.

I did post details in a thread earlier.

The lady has text me and I will drop a sample off next week .

I am excited to see what results she comes up with.

So far people who have tried my honey have no idea what it is .
