yes the Te pari brander will brand painted boxes , it just leaves a darkened rectangle around the brand. Run it hot enough and you won't have to wire brush the branding head 

I have been using this brander for over 10 years.

I'm thinking of a gas heated one that burns the registration number in, but would like to hear from anyone using them about how good they are and how fast they are. And if all good, where to get one?

The branding plates are made of bronze (stays hot longer). Bit heavy for this kind of handle.

I have a Paton branding iron which connects to the nozzle of the gas bottle. It heats up really quickly and uses very little gas. Branding painted woodware is no problem and it never gets gunked up. Can’t remember what it cost but it’s great
