NZBF Burning Clothing After AFB

Recommended Posts

Hi,

Is it standard practice to burn your veil/overalls after AFB, or will a good wash with bleach or similar suffice?

I assume your hive tool can be sterilised with flame?

Just wash with a bleach soak.

For the hive tool, I don't like flaming mine too much, except in the field.  -- scrape down and scrub and soak in bleach.

I’ve not heard of beekeepers throwing their clothes into the fire as they’re burning their AFB hive .

I thought it might have been an effective way to get spores into an non-infected hive, and wasn't sure if fire was the only solution.

On the course you’re advised to flash your tool in the smoker and wash your clothes in bleech and detergent. It was universally agreed/advised that gloves are cheep and not worth the risk since the are impossible to clean properly. Burn them was the consensus.

You also need to scrub the belows on your smoker.

There’s a few good videos on the AFB website regarding this

the risk from clothing, even gloves and cleaned hive tools, is negligible.

wash clothes as per normal.
