M4tt 4032 Posted December 8, 2018 The native Swamp Manuka is coming up to full flower , usually at its peak on Christmas Day . I like to think they are our local Christmas trees . These are 5 year old plants I dug out of the drain banks and transplanted . They have flowered profusely since their first summer . All the peat land here was covered in these forming a dense scrub , which was cleared by settlers for farming in the early 1900’s . Not a honey bee in sight , but being heavily worked by several solitary native bee species , paspalum flies and large paper wasps . I did not know paper wasps worked flowers . I thought they were carnivorous .

tudor 1486 Posted December 20, 2018 Lime/linden really out, we noticed the bees buzzing at just after 6 this morning. The tree is about 25 years old, and just covered with flowers, handkerchiefs, and bees. Very nice.
Borage 79 Posted December 23, 2018 I've seen a few bees, bumblebees and wool carder bees visiting Greater Birdsfoot Trefoil Lotus pedunculatus since about start of December, amongst clover and buttercup. It seems the bees here have other preferable foraging options on offer. http://www.terrain.net.nz/friends-of-te-henui-group/weeds-by-scientific-names/lotus-pedunculatus-lotus.html Is this present anywhere in enough quantity to get a flow? Oma 326 Posted December 23, 2018 I’ve often stood and checked out to see what visits these flowers but haven’t seen much on them at all a bumblebee at most. The blackberry is hard out flowering here and we have plenty of that here.
