We are, from a swarm last year, looking pretty good after winter, just hungry

true enough. but maybe he has found someone selling top bar nuc's. It is a bit early to be selling swarms in September, is anyone actually selling swarms at the moment? who, where?

No, no, no. Just relax you guys.

I will see  if I can get a swarm for free. But since I have never seen one around here, I will probably buy a NUC.

Will wait till the senior students leave as school is hectic this time of year. Though we did set up a swarm trap on the school farm yesterday.

Swarms are a thing, whether you have seen  one before or not. Just out your name down on a swarm catcher's list, Facebook group or whatever, and keep checking. It can happen!! And to me, the best ever way of getting bees!!

Wrong plan. To get a swarm you got to be ready. When it happens, you act.

I have a completed, yet empty top bar. I have been given 4 old, but empty Langstroth boxes.   I have 2 swarm traps set up and a box to transport one. If a swarm is available, I should be able to get it and house it. I even have a hood and gloves in my vehicle.

Otherwise I will look at purchasing a nuc in the school holidays or late October/November. If I am buying a nuc, in theory I control the date it arrives. Obviously if I get a swarm, it could be tomorrow and at an inconvenient time.

I think I may have to thoroughly plan out my replies on this forum as I keep getting misunderstood!

And once you've mastered that, you'd be well qualified for a UN job mediating Trump/LFO

I caught a swarm last September in my top bar hive using lemongrass oil and some comb from the previous tenants.  These poor girls were robbed out by wintering commercial colonies just up the road.  It was revenge - I was so mad.  I now have all my langs, nucs, everything I've got set up as swarm traps.  At the moment I have 1 queened colony and two splits.  Probably too early but we'll see.

Hives getting robbed is normally the fault of the owner, not someone up the road.

Yes, and we laugh when a swarm is reported close by, we state quite unequivocally "it's not from one on MY hives ..."

:)

Must develop a chapter on "Truths in bee keeping ..."
